What Makes a House a Home?
Share
Hi everyone, well, as you know, I don’t blog often, but I’ve got my blog head on, and I’ve decided to write an article or two. I don't want to you all to lose sight of what Quantock Inspiration’s brand is all about. When I sit in my kitchen, I have the most wonderful outlook out of the kitchen double doors to the rear of the house. From here I can see far into the distance and all there are fields, rolling meadows and trees – and a few cows of course. And I love this. All I can hear are the birds, a gentle breeze and my chooks clucking around in the garden. Complete peace. But then I turn around and look at the inside aesthetic and I think, ‘What makes a house, a home?’
A house is made of bricks, timber, glass and paint. A home is something entirely different. Most of us have walked into beautifully decorated houses that somehow felt cold and stepped into modest cottages that immediately felt warm and welcoming. So, what makes the difference? It's rarely the size of the rooms, the latest interior trends or expensive furniture. A home is created by the things that make us feel comfortable, safe and connected.
The Things We Choose to Keep
Look around your home and you'll probably notice that your most treasured possessions are not always the most valuable. I have things in my home that are decades old; a piece of furniture that has seen better days but brings back happy memories from my childhood. Perhaps it's an old photograph, a gift from a loved one, a vase bought on holiday, a handmade mug or a lamp that creates a warm glow on winter evenings. These objects tell the story of our lives. They remind us of people, places and moments that matter to us. Unlike mass-produced items, meaningful objects often carry memories and emotions that make a house feel personal.
The Importance of Comfort
Home is where we relax, recharge and escape from the demands of everyday life. Soft lighting, for example; I have a climbing tree vine crawling up my bedroom walls on either side of my bed. When I switch it on, it immediately makes my room look instantly cosier. Favourite blankets. Comfortable chairs. The sound of rain against the windows – that is one I love, except I love to hear it on the roof of the house. It’s quite loud as we don’t have a loft. But I’m inside, warm and dry – sitting up in bed with my tree lights going up the wall. The smell of fresh coffee or baking bread. These simple things help create an atmosphere that allows us to slow down. In a world that often feels busy and fast-paced, our homes have become increasingly important as places of rest and comfort.
Bringing Nature Indoors
Many people naturally feel calmer when surrounded by elements of nature. Flowers on the table, wooden textures, natural colours, Plants, and other objects inspired by the countryside.Nature has a remarkable ability to help us feel grounded.
Living in Somerset and walking the Quantock Hills, I often find inspiration in the colours, textures and changing seasons around me. The warmth of autumn leaves, weathered wood and coastal colours all find their way into my creative work.
Handmade Objects Tell Stories
There is something special about owning something that has been made by hand. Every handmade piece carries the time, care and creativity of the person who made it. No two pieces are exactly alike. Perhaps that is why handmade objects often become the items we keep for years rather than replace after a season. They add character, individuality and personality to our homes. They remind us that not everything needs to be mass-produced or perfect.
Home Reflects Who We Are
Our homes often tell our stories; the books we choose, the colours we decorate with, the artwork on our walls, the objects displayed on shelves. These things reveal our interests, memories and personalities. A home doesn't need to follow trends to feel beautiful. It simply needs to reflect the people who live there. I look around my home and it practically looks the same as the day we moved in. I don’t feel the need to upgrade anything. It’s cosy and inviting, a little bit cluttered here and there, yet it’s personal to me. The photos on the wall of years gone by, my kids riding their ponies at shows – of course they are all grown up now. Pictures of dear animals that we have lost along the years – they bring me comfort and I see no reason to ever move them.
Slowing Down and Appreciating the Small Things
Sometimes what makes a house feel like home isn't the big things at all. It's the soft light in the evening, the favourite chair, a treasured ornament, the familiar objects that quietly become part of everyday life. As many of us seek to live more slowly and intentionally, we are beginning to value quality, meaning and connection over simply filling our homes with more possessions.
Bringing Warmth Into Your Own Home
At Quantock Inspiration, many of my handmade pieces are inspired by the landscapes, colours and natural beauty of Somerset. My aim is not simply to create decorative objects, but to make pieces that bring warmth, character and a sense of connection to the home using what the natural world has to offer. Natural wood, slate and even glass, although manufactured, is made from raw natural materials. We only ever recycle glass, wanting to breathe new life into discarded bottles. Whether it is a handcrafted lamp, a thoughtful gift or a piece inspired by the countryside, I believe the objects we choose can help turn a house into a home. Because in the end, home isn't created by walls and furniture.
It's about the love we have for the things that bring us comfort, the memories we make and the stories we surround ourselves with.
